The Municipal Council covers an area of 10 km², and after the creation of the Municipal Council in 2013, the municipal council’s population is 12,756, according to available data from the delimitation based on the 2011 population. Municipal Council Champawat is considered a sacred place, being the main point of the Champavati River and home to the Ghatotkakhash, Baleshwar, Nagnath, and Golju temples. Due to the geographical conditions of Champawat, the main city of Champawat district, Champawat has a relatively large area. It is home to the district’s only undergraduate college, a polytechnic college, the district headquarters, and two intermediate colleges and several public schools.
As the main commercial and educational center for the surrounding areas, as well as the district headquarters and tehsil office, the city sees a daily influx of thousands of people. Many people reside in the city, but they are neither included in the municipal family register nor have they been counted in the city area during the census. In light of this, the current population of the municipal council is estimated to be approximately 12,756.
Following the creation of the municipal council, as the rural areas were transformed into urban areas, the general public and elected representatives emphasized the need for a streamlined sanitation system, primarily for city development. Since the municipality is newly formed, sources of income are not being generated. The municipality is continuously making efforts to generate its own income. With limited resources, the municipal body collects and transports garbage using two vehicles. Efforts were initiated to streamline the city’s sanitation system with the provision of dustbins and cleaning materials. As a result, garbage is currently being collected from commercial establishments as well as homes along the city’s vehicle access roads.
Municipal Council – Champawat is located 1 km from the district headquarters, Champawat, on the National Highway, and is surrounded by hills at an altitude of 5,280 feet above sea level. Much of the city is rocky and rugged. The city’s rugged topography is challenging, making it a convenient commute. Surrounded by hills and nestled in a valley, the city experiences pleasant summers. Being newly established, the city still retains a rural atmosphere. Many people cultivate agriculture within the city. The Municipal Council was established in 2013, after the formation of the Municipal Council in 2011.
The population as per the currently available records of the delimitation done at the time of creation of the municipality is as follows:-
